Halwa, an Indian fudge, is supposed to take a lot of time and effort to make. You have to dry roast the ingredients, which takes a lot of time, sometimes do some grinding and some more cooking and roasting before it’s done. Too much of an effort. So I tried this recipe and loved it to the core. It has an easy list of ingredients which is generally available in most houses, plus it’s easy to do and it tastes really good. After this recipe, I have stopped making the regular Sooji ka Halwa. You have to mix all the ingredients together, dry roast them, add water, cover and it’s done. Only the roasting part takes a little time, otherwise it’s a cakewalk.
This Halwa is a regular in our Sunday breakfast, it’s the whole family’s favourite. Hope it becomes your favourite too.
1 cup Semolina
1 cup sugar
1 cup Milk powder (I use everyday dairy whitener)
3/4 cup refined oil
2 cups water
In a large Kadhai, add all the ingredients except water. Bhuno or dry roast on medium flame till you get a nice golden brown colour, then add the water and cover. Let it cook for 5-6 mins. Remove the cover and mix well. Serve hot sprinkled with finely chopped nuts or as it is. Goes well with Puffed Pooris. Enjoy!
